Title

Edward Perry Warren (1860-1928)

Description

(Art Collector)

Warren was born into an affluent Boston family whose wealth derived from his father's paper mill located in Westbrook, Maine. In 1883, when Warren graduated from Harvard University, he met Bernard Berenson, then a freshman at Boston University. Warren sponsored Bernard’s admission to Harvard the following year. The two men shared a passion for classical literature, and while Bernard pursued classical languages at Harvard, Warren continued his studies in classics and archaeology at Oxford. He then settled in England, and later began collecting art. Berenson had imagined himself at Oxford, and hearing of his friend's experiences there spurred him to apply for the Parker Travelling Fellowship (cat. BB.II.3).
