Lists of "Books Read," 1884-1885

All but one of the dozen books Mary mentioned in her notebook as having read in December 1884  and January 1885 concern philosophy or literature. In her essay “Mary Whitall Smith’s Harvard Annex Readings: A Selection” (cat. MS.III.7), Tiffany Johnston transcribes these notes and develops them into an intellectual snapshot of Mary during this pivotal moment in her development.
