At Harvard, Bernard’s studies focused on ancient languages. One reason the College appealed to him was the opportunity to study with Charles Lanman, author of the celebrated A Sanskrit Reader. Bernard even brought the textbook to I Tatti, and stored a few pages of notes inside, together with the list of course offering.
