Title

Mary Berenson, "A Life of Bernard Berenson"

Description

Mary’s incomplete and unpublished biography of Bernard Berenson (BB), written largely between 1931-1933, is the most important source for the Harvard years of both students. In a diary entry from 1933 (cat. BB.IV.3), Mary recorded Bernard’s reaction to the manuscript. Each chapter exists in various versions, both handwritten and typed. This typescript for the first chapter, marked 'complete', is entitled “Ten Years of Preparation for Connoisseurship;” see below for a complete transcription.
