Title

Judith Berenson (1847-1938)

Description

(Mother of Bernard)
The youngest of nine children, Judith came from an affluent family descended from a noble lineage of Spanish Sephardic Jews. She married Bernard’s father, Albert, at the age of seventeen. As was the custom, the marriage was arranged by the local matchmaker. Bernard, the eldest child, was born in 1865, and Judith would have two more children before taking her family to the North End of Boston in 1875 to join Albert. Unlike her husband, Judith retained her Jewish faith, though Albert's emphatic secularity prevented her from attending religious services until after his death. To help make ends meet, she prepared meals for boarders in their home.
